In a 1981 comedy set in New York City, Dudley Moore portrays Arthur Bach, a drunken low life born into billions, while Co-star Liza Minnelli plays Linda Marolla, a poor working single-woman who lives with her father in Queens.
Arthur Bach is a middle-aged man with no job, no wife, no family but here's the catch; He is a billionaire. He does what he likes during the day (which is mostly drinking) and parties at night. Having no job means he is his own boss and the only person who takes care of him is his best friend and butler, Hobson. But sometimes money can't buy you everything and Arthur is lacking one large item. Someone to love.
Dudley Moore does an A+ job in his role as Arthur. He is funny, the drunk act is legendary and not obnoxious. As you're watching the film you realize that he is the only person who could have played this role. That is, of course, besides Russell Brand. Who oh, by the way, is playing Arthur in the 2011 remake which hit theaters April 8th. Casting as a whole was phenomenal and everyone fit their role.
I would say Arthur is a classic. It gives you everything you look for in a movie. Laughs, quotes that you can say 20 years later, death, and last but not least a love story. Will Arthur find love and someone to share his billions with? I guess you'll have to see for yourself.
